The Senior Director of Development for 3rd Party Fundraising reports directly to the Senior Executive Director of Chapter, Legacy, Affinity Groups, 3rd Party Fundraising and Workplace Giving. The Senior Director, as a member of the Corporate and National Philanthropy program team, will help ensure the fundraising success of the Office of Philanthropy through a number of senior-level responsibilities. This effort is in keeping with the shared vision of the Preparing Our People initiative to prepare our office for the rigors of a campaign, and to realize our vision of excelling as a highly collaborative, efficient, and creative team. The SDOD-3rd Party Fundraising will contribute to this vision by providing expertise, leadership and will be a partner to the SEDOD-ALG3PWPE in creating and implementing our vision of being known institutionally and nationally as a model of excellence among elite fundraising programs.

Specifically, the SDOD-3rd Party Fundraising, under the direction of the SEDOD-ALG3PWPE , is responsible for building, leading, growing and stewarding a national volunteer donor program consisting of  supporters who design their own events with the goals being to raise direct revenue and fuel our national individual donor pipeline.  This program will build on City of Hope's rich, 100+ year old history of outreach through a national network of legacy chapter auxiliaries that helped create awareness, involve, and cultivate prospective donors. These efforts are focused on identifying, cultivating and securing individuals who are interested in financially contributing to advance COH's critical work in cancer and diabetes research as well as this a model of compassionate care that can inform institutions worldwide.

The SDOD-3rd Party Fundraising provides strategic insight and guidance regarding Office of Philanthropy fundraising programs/priorities via volunteer groups of fundraisers and the groups' related activities and events.   The SDOD-3rd Party Fundraising will demonstrate sound judgement and discretion in working with key influencers to balance the interests of volunteers with the needs of City of Hope as it builds a national program, its infrastructure, leadership, and governance.


Key Responsibilities include:

Lead the group, doing the external outreach necessary to advance goals in developing a donor-centric, synergistic, efficient and highly effective national 3rd party fundraising program including:

  • Lead an effort to work with grateful families to encourage them to hold annual 3rd party fundraising events and have them be efficient, effective, not take staff time and net as much money as possible
  • Have your team become a presence with our patient and family populations to facilitate trust and conversations about 3rd party fundraising events
  • Work with your team to identify best practices and support efficient and profitable events through toolkits and templates
  • Along with staff, develop long term relationships and steward 3rd party fundraising families to become consistent City of Hope donors
  • Lead team to support and maximize 3rd party fundraisers that come to us through the general patient population or the community.
  • Create pro-active fundraising strategies and opportunities in addition to opportunities that come to us in each area of responsibility.
  • Working with SEDOD-National Strategy to provide prospects for individual donor prospect pipeline.
  • Meet annual activity and financial performance metrics.

Managing the unit: Lead the 3rd Party staff with a focus on accountability, best practices, and collaboration. The incumbent will demonstrate an ability to motivate staff toward adherence to key performance indicators and to maintain a productive, highly collaborative and integrated culture. Includes:

  • Oversee management of staff and act as mentor for all content and professional development areas. Includes serving as a resource in developing strategies, conducting ongoing conversations regarding performance in relation to metrics, and articulating opportunities for employees' growth and professional development in a thoughtful manner.
  • Provide leadership throughout employees' tenure, from interviewing and making thoughtful hiring decisions, and providing foundational onboarding to new employees, to ensuring high employee retention within the Office of Philanthropy.
  • Ensure proactive fundraising strategies and opportunities are designed and pursued to maximize fundraising.
  • Responsible for meeting established performance goals for 3rd Party Fundraising.

Serve as a role model for the Office of Philanthropy. Includes:

  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with City of Hope faculty and staff to support fundraising initiatives for COH priorities.
  • Oversee management of staff and act as mentor for all content and professional development areas. Includes serving as a resource in developing strategies, conducting ongoing conversations regarding performance in relation to metrics, and articulating opportunities for employees' growth and professional development in a thoughtful manner.
  • Demonstrate an ability to solve problems, overcome hurdles, and navigate sensitive issues with discretion, tact, and strong communication skills.

Minimum Education and Skills Required for Consideration:

  • Bachelor's Degree in business, philanthropy or related field.
    • Experience may substitute for minimum education requirements
  • Must have at least 5 years' experience in a sales-oriented patient-focused fund raising, development, or related field in non-profit environment.
  • Must have a demonstrated understanding of social media outlets and public facing events.
  • Must have a proven track record of sales accomplishment.
  • Must have at least 3 years of supervisory experience of at least 5 employees.
  • This position requires travel, irregular hours and communication with volunteers outside regular business hours.

Preferred Education and Skills:

  • Master's Degree in business, philanthropy or related field.
  • Previous experience in healthcare, science or an academic setting highly desired.
  • Previous experience in working with survivors and their families would be helpful to candidate.
